Chief Secretary Alok Kumar Jain in a meeting held at Secretariat on Thursday directed the officers concerned to ensure efficient management of traffic in Dehradun so that the common people were relieved of traffic congestion and road accidents affectively controlled.
Chief Secretary Jain said that Dehradun being the capital city of the State, the traffic pressure was increasing here. He stressed on introducing new traffic management in this situation. He directed the officers to take suggestions from the general public, public representatives, chalk out traffic plan and implement it within a month. He laid emphasis on better coordination amongst MDDA, Nagar Nigam, PWD, Power Department and local Administration in execution of the plan.
DIG Dehradun Region Sanjay Gunjyal pointed out that presence of telephone and electricity poles on the roads was affecting the traffic. Chief Secretary instructed the officers of the respective departments to hold meeting with the DIG and find out measures to resolve this problem. He asked them to opt for one-way traffic in busy streets in the city and install new traffic lights wherever needed. Underlining that workshops on roadsides were against the rule and was hampering traffic flow, he directed officers of Nagar Nigam to identify those workshops and rehabilitate them at Transport Nagar. They could also be fined as per the rule, he said. Mr. Jain also asked them to survey all unauthorized parking spots and regularize them. This would generate revenue for the Corporation, he observed.
Mr. Jain directed the PWD officers to ban unnecessary cuts in the busy roads and position new dividers. He asked the PWD officers to prepare proposals of over-bridges at Mohakampur and Jogiwala within a week. Pointing out encroachments of roads and footpaths, the Chief Secretary directed the PWD to launch special anti-encroachment drive to make them encroachment free.
It came in the notice that there were 2099 theliwalas who neither possessed identity cards nor token from Nagar Nigam. These street vendors had also encroached several places. The Chief Secretary asked Nagar Nigam to provide list of such vendors to Police Administration so that appropriate action could be taken against them. Observing that the garbage trucks lifted garbage in the morning time causing traffic disturbance, Mr. Jain asked Nagar Nigam to ensure the garbage lifting works were done at night.
The meeting was attended by Secretary Transport Dr. Umakant Panwar, MDDA Vice Chairman R Meenakshi Sundaram, Additional Secretary Finance MC Joshi, PWD Chief Engineer Lalit Mohan, District Magistrate Ravinath Raman, SSP Neeru Garg, City Magistrate Harak Singh Rawat, Secretary MDDA Vanshidhar Tiwari, Superintendent Engineer PWD VC Vinwal and Executive Engineer PWD CM Pandey amongst others.
