Hydro-power projects in Uttarakhand was being opposed on the basis of religious sentiment


Uttarakhand Drinking Water Minister Mantri Prasad Naithani called on UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday and urged her to revoke the decision to stall Srinagar Hydro-power project.
Mr. Naithani, later, told media persons at Uttarakhand Niwas that the hydro-power projects in Uttarakhand was being opposed on the basis of religious sentiment which was not good for the state. Describing it a game played in the name of rich water resources of Uttarakhand, he said that hindrances were being posed in the way of power generation in Uttarakhand. "I have urged Ms. Sonia Gandhi to issue directives to revoke decision on Srinagar Hydro-power project. Ms. Gandhi taking it seriously said power generation played instrumental role in the economical development and there was need for a serious consideration on hydro-power projects of Uttarakhand," Mr. Naithani said.
Mr. Naithani said that he had written a letter addressed to Principal Secretary to Prime Minister, Union Forest and Environment Minister and Union Energy Minister stating that if the multipurpose Srinagar Hydro-power project would not be started then he would sit on hunger strike with project supporters from Uttarakhand at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi from 12 July 2012 onwards.
